I set rules for myself on how to play and follow them from beginning to end ... I've only won 1 tournament but considering most tournaments I play are 5k-12k players I generally place in the top 300 or better.
Don't go playing crap ... however you slice and dice it ... its still crap ... you may get lucky and bluff people out or even hit lucky cards 9 out of 10 times with crap but it only takes 1 loss to end your game.
Your main goal should be not to get yourself pot committed unless you have a great hand or feel you can chase your opponent(s) out .. Naturally the less people in the hand the better your odds of winning .. Never show weakness unless you have them beat without a doubt, then you can let them build the pot for you and then trump them on the river .. Aggressive play can score you some great pots but it can also cost you the tournament in a single hand. SO be careful.
Don't be afraid to take your time when betting, calling or raising .. Thats what the timer is there for, it gives you time to weigh your odds verses your opponents and allows you to keep your emotions under control .. The faster you make your move, the more you are relying on instinct then logic.
Also, if you want to play aggressive, don't play your hand .. Play your opponents hand(s)
If you hit a great flop but feel you could be out drawn ... depending on your opponents, you may want to consider going all in to take the pot .. unless they have an over pair, 2 pair or set on the flop they generally won't risk calling.
The great players will tell you it takes a better player to fold a great hand then it takes to play it.
I keep one thing in mind whenever I play ... Better to fold a winning hand and loose a little then stay with what you thought was a winning hand and loose alot.
And always study your opponents during the course of play.
