Types of Players
There are some basics you need to know before you start the game, one of the most intuitive but less understood by the beginner player is the type of player that he/she will become and the type of player he/she is up against. There are four major types of players in the game of poker;
Tight aggressive: This is the style that most pros recommend. Playing only a few hands (20% per round) but coming in for a raise when you do play a hand. It is also recommended that you maintain that aggression through the flop and turn betting rounds as long as the opponents show weakness. The types of pros that play this style are, Howard Lederer, John Juanda, TJ Cloutier, Barry Greenstein.
Loose aggressive: A player who will call many bets preflop, but will also frequently re-raise, raise with no pair and no draw. This player is known to play any type of hands. Types of pros that play this style are; Gus Hansen, Carlos Mortenson, Daniel Negreanu. It is important to note that many beginner players are aspired by these players ‘moves’ and they will try to mimick this style when they first start to play the game; this is a fatal error that will lead to massive swings in your bankroll.
Tight passive: This is the type of player that will not call many bets preflop, but will play very weak when they do play; they won’t bring it in for a raise, and when they do hit a monster they will only call the bets without re-raising.
Loose passive: Someone who will call many bets preflop and also call many value bets with second bests hands. There are no pros who will play passively.
The conclusion is that to become a good player you must learn to use aggression in a timely matter. The better the player that you become and the better that you become at reading an opponents cards, the more aggression you will be able to show.
